America, why you no drive stick?!

Here’s the thing,

My manual rowing brethren, we have been screwed over yet again. Why is that, you may ask? Well, take a look at this:

Ford Europe

Look at it, just look at it! That color scheme! The gold wheels! It’s awesome!

This, my friends, is the Ford Focus ST-H, the H stands for Hertz. And as you can see here, they offer it as a rental option. Unfortunately, it’s not offered here in the States, only in select areas in Europe. The vast majority of American’s do not buy manuals. As of 2010, only 6.7% of all new cars purchased were in fact equipped with manual transmissions. Add that to the fact American licenses do not have any annotations for being licensed to drive a manual transmission on a Class C license, and that puts any notion of these things being rented in the States just plain dead in the water.

Start teaching your kids to drive stick, so more people buy manuals! So that way I can hoon a Focus ST that isn’t mine!

And that, that’s the thing about why you need to learn stick dammit!
